I understand English but cannot Speak

I understand English but cannot Speak
I understand English but cannot Speak

Why?

Why does it always happen that you are able to understand English music, read English books, watch English movies( with or without the subtitles), and understand what an English speaker is saying.’

But when it comes to speaking the same language - You’re feel flat

What is stopping you from becoming a fluent English speaker?

And let me tell you, it’s not just you. It is a common and one of the major problems sha
red by everyone.

This article is a chapter and verse of this problem that can help you for good. And it brings together all the tactics that I had used for overcoming this issue.

You are able to understand English and not be able to speak it because you are just intaking the language a lot. Which means you are reading lots of books, watching web series, listening to music or podcasts. Your intake ratio is more than your outturn ( i.e. speaking in English ).

You are storing all the information & all the sounds in your memory. That is the reason you’re familiar with the words, you know their meaning. But when it comes to using these words at the time of speaking - You can hardly do that due to lack of confidence.

Another reason you are not able to speak is because speaking requires more effort than listening & reading English. When you listen or read, you recognize information, but when you speak  you need to recall that information on the spot, you get less time for thinking and speaking without hesitation.

Now, if you think that learning grammar rules, memorizing fancy vocabulary and words will make things easier for you - You’re absolutely wrong my friend !

Just forget about these things & give your 100 % in  practicing conversational spoken English. It means learning to speak English just like you speak your mother tongue.

Speak & speak a lot. Speak wherever you get a chance. However, only in places where you can make a mistake & it won’t cost you anything.

Nothing comes easy. So, my advice to you is just to be engrossed and indulge yourself in all the activities that can uplift your confidence in speaking English.

Here are some activities that should be a part of your day -

  1. Make small groups of 2 - 4 people and practice  speaking in English everyday with them. You keep inviting people and speak English with one another.

  1. You can always take help from mobile applications and social media. You can take help from free or paid applications. Both have their own pros and cons.

Eng Varta is one such application where you can practice English wholeheartedly without any fear of being judged. It is a platform where English Experts will boost your confidence to use and acknowledge English language.

Fear of being judged for mistakes is one of the biggest reasons for not speaking in English. But to become a fluent speaker, your efforts and focus should be more on speaking the language.

When you repeat something all over again & again, it sticks to your memory. The same thing will happen when you build a habit of speaking in English. You will automatically start to speak English subconsciously with regular practice.

In conclusion, I just want to add that the problem isn’t about ‘You being not able to speak’, it is about your fear of speaking in English. Listening English is under your comfort zone and you do it without any effort. But for speaking, you need to come out  of the shelter bubble and let yourself express yourself even with your limited words.
